A senior trustee from an IAPF member scheme is playing a central role in steering one of Europe's most ambitious green infrastructure investments, a €2 billion fund targeting sustainable energy, transport and social infrastructure projects across the continent.
The fund, which draws on capital from several large Irish and European occupational pension schemes, is designed to provide long-term, inflation-linked returns while contributing directly to the EU's climate transition goals. For Irish pension trustees, it represents a growing conviction that sustainable infrastructure is not simply an ethical choice but a sound long-term investment strategy.
"The assets we are investing in will still be generating returns in thirty or forty years," the trustee said. "That aligns very well with the long-term liabilities we are managing on behalf of our members. The sustainability dimension is increasingly inseparable from the financial case."
The fund has already committed capital to a portfolio of solar generation facilities in southern Europe, a rail freight modernisation programme in central Europe, and a social housing development partnership in Ireland. Further commitments in offshore wind and green hydrogen infrastructure are expected before the end of the year.
For the IAPF, the fund is an example of how Irish pension schemes are stepping beyond their traditional role as passive allocators and taking an active hand in shaping the investments they hold. The association has been working to connect member schemes with credible sustainable infrastructure opportunities as demand for this asset class continues to grow.
